Insane or Just...Overly Optimistic?
I've tried my hand at blogging a few times
before and have tipped my cap at those who have lasted more than a month. I was
weak, I couldn't last seven days.
But I'm back,
ready to try again, and hopefully this time I can stick with it.
On another note,
I've also decided to try my hand at NaNoWriMo again. For those of you who don't
know what this is, it's an acronym. Oh, you knew that? What does it stand for,
you ask?
Well, it's only
the most *downloading completely made up words* horrifying-est, stupend-erous,
hair pulling out-erous 30 days of pulling a novel out of your bum, that an
author can endure. But most love doing it because...we love to push
ourselves I guess. We love seeing what we can come up with when put on the
spot. And to be honest, most do a great job of doing just that. There have been
many who have conquered NaNoWriMo and went on to publish their
work-after editing and reediting I'm sure-and gaining many fans along the
way.
Now before I start
rambling, like a have a tendency to do, let me explain what the event is. The
NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and it's just about the
best thing I have ever had the pleasure of doing. No dirty pun intended.
NaNoWriMo starts the first of November and ends midnight, local time, on the
30th. During this time, thousands, maybe even millions, of authors from around
the world set a goal of completing a novel of at least 50K words in thirty
days.
Sounds
insane?
Maybe, but is it
possible?
Of course! With
the support of family, friends, and even the staff who created the event,
pushing out 50K words could be a snap.
It all begins with
signing up. You don't even have to know what your novel will be about, who the
characters are, or what genre you are going to write for. That comes later if
you haven't figured it out yet. You'll set up your account, wait for
a confirmation email, then start your journey by looking around
and getting your feet wet. A new swimmer just doesn't dive nose first
into the deep end of the pool, right? No, they splash around in the shallow end.
Check out some of
the forums, check out the history and published authors, but most importantly
have fun checking it out. It's a good way to not only expand your literary mind but to
meet new people and gain writing buddies.
What happens at the end of the month when you finish this crazy challenge? You get awesome web badges and the self satisfaction that you completed your first novel. What's more rewarding than that? Not enough? How about the fact that createspace is giving out 5 FREE copies of your completed novel to any participants who complete the NaNoWriNo challenge. Not to mention numerous other offers from companies like Scrivener, Storyist, Yarny, and many others.
If you're a young writer under the age of seventeen and think 50 thousand words is an insane task to take on for your first time, then try the NaNoWriMo for Young Writers. It's all the fun just with your own word count. You want to try 50K? Go for it. You want to try 30K? Say no more. How about just 3k? That's just fine and dandy. It's whatever you feel comfortable with.
So get out there! Try it!

So I guess that's it for today. I'm going to try my best to do this whole "blog" thing and not get scared off with my tale tucked between my legs again. So...let the writing be EVER in your favor! In two days....
